This past Thursday; Ann, Harold and I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Kampala wine fair hosted by KWV wines at the Protea gardens having seen the flyer on Instagram. At 50,000ugx a ticket guests would get to sample 100 wine types, cheese and chocolate pairings as well as an opportunity to meet wine maker Jolze Van Wyk. With the event starting at 6pm, I arrived about 30 minutes later to see the event had started on time as promised. I will forever have a raging semi for events and people that keep time.
After making payments we were each given a wine glass to use throughout the evening. It was a lovely set up under a large white tent, soft lights with the vendors on either side of the live band. The vendors, majority of whom fall under the Vicland wine and spirits distributors umbrella included KWV, Golden Kaan, Van Loveren, Excelsior, Rooiberg and, JP Chenet. Cheese was from Kyaninga Dairy and the chocolate, Moonbean chocolates.
Initially I had a strategy in mind, sample the white wines, definitely some rose and maybe the reds but you know what they say about best laid plans. The three of us ended up going table to table sampling everything they had, it being our chance an all. The hosts were very knowledgeable .I truly feel like I learned a thing or two. I love cheese in general so Kyaninga’s variety went down a treat, can’t say I’ve had anything like it the best bit though was the chocolates, the name moonbean alone made me want to jump in. It really is some of the best chocolate around. It’s made here as well so naturally I’m rooting for it. The proprietor did mention they were opening a place in Bugolobi that will offer tours and all so best believe I’m there when they become available.
As we got to the last of the vendors, we got to sample some of the international brands mostly Chilean wine which sadly didn’t do it for me but I was very happy to find some Prosecco at the end of it, I did linger there quite a bit. Joy! My favorite wines had to be Excelsior and Loveren’s Chenin No.5
I’ve attended a few events in my time and I can honestly say this was definitely a good one. It was very well organized, attended and our glasses really did overflow. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for any and all future gigs.
